Comparing Cells with Voltt

In this tutorial, we’ll walk through a complete workflow for selecting and evaluating cells using the the The Voltt platform.
The example application is a quadcopter drone, and we’ll compare the 21700 Molicel P-Series cells using all three of Voltt's tools: Cell Library, Simulate, and Powermap.

By following the videos below, you’ll see how to:

  • Narrow down candidates in the Cell Library
  • Test performance with Simulate
  • Assess pulse power capabilities with Powermap

Part 1: Cell Library

The Cell Library is The Voltt's starting point for selecting cells.
Here you can filter by key requirements such as form factor, capacity, and C-rate, and then visualize results across energy and power density plots.

In this video, we shortlist three Molicel P-Series cells (P45B, P50B, and P60B) and compare their capacities, discharge capabilities, and other key specifications.

Part 2: Simulate

Simulate is our virtual battery cycler.
Using About:Energy’s electro-thermal models, you can test how cells behave under realistic mission profiles or fixed load conditions.

In this video, we simulate the shortlisted cells under two drone operating power levels (75 W and 150 W). We examine runtime, temperature rise, and voltage behavior, and then extend the analysis with a representative quadcopter duty cycle.

Part 3: Powermap

Powermap evaluates peak pulse performance, running thousands of simulations to map out maximum power capability across state-of-charge and temperature.

In this video, we apply Powermap to our Molicel P-Series cells, comparing their pulse discharge performance and identifying the SoC ranges where each cell excels. The tool also provides insights into current, C-rate, resistance, and heat generation, and results can be exported for sharing or further analysis.

Summary

By combining Cell Library, Simulate, and Powermap, The Voltt gives you a complete workflow for cell selection and evaluation. This end-to-end process helps you move from initial screening through to detailed performance insights, ensuring you choose the right cell for your application.
